In Gratitude I Sing

about

This six-part round or canon is a song of thanksgiving – and in a way it’s also a song of Thanksgiving, which is a holiday I miss very much, having grown up in the USA. Here in England, we do celebrate Harvest in the autumn, but it’s not quite the same. I think there’s something wonderful in the idea of setting aside one day in the year to gather together with our family, friends and neighbours, share a really good meal, and remember all the things we have to be thankful for. I’m particularly grateful to the singers who join me on this recording. For the story of how Niamh and Tom were roped in, see under “New Oysters New”. Gerry of course was already on hand, and my friend Emer Ní Bhrádaigh (godmother to my daughter Lily Jane) sings in the Guinness Choir, so had no excuse for not participating. Frances, to whom Trevor has the good fortune to be married, nearly escaped until I chanced to overhear her warbling in the kitchen one afternoon while preparing a lovely dinner for all of us. A certain amount of arm-twisting was necessary to get her on board, but I’m glad I persevered.

lyrics

This earth of ours is beautiful
The sky, the rocks, the trees
The birds and the animals, rivers and seas
In gratitude I sing to you
For I am thankful, I am thankful
I am thankful in my soul
