What Are We Going To Do

about

I’ve always been fond of the old-fashioned “verse-refrain” form employed by Rodgers & Hart and other Golden Age songwriters like Cole Porter, the Gershwins and so forth (the Beatles also used it in “Honey Pie” and “Here, There and Everywhere”). Gerry and I had written the main section of this song a year or so before I decided that it needed an introductory “verse”; and when we went into the studio to record it, Rod McVey’s Fender Rhodes and Liam Bradley’s congas gave it a different sort of old-fashioned-ness .... So what we’ve ended up with is a song written in 2010 and 2011 using a 1930s structure, with a 1970s instrumental arrangement!

lyrics

I didn’t know that kiss was coming
Guess I could have started running
Soon as I saw what you were thinking
Serves me right
I shouldn’t have been drinking
But anyway, you did
So let’s consider

What are we going to do about it
This little thing that you and me have started
Tonight is not enough
I might just fall in love with you
What are we going to do

I wouldn’t say that this was unexpected
If you hadn’t kissed me I’d regret it
Cos when you leaned my way
I couldn’t turn my face from you
What are we going to do

This could be the edge of something
Dangerous, too
But right now it’s all new

I don’t know what way to play it
In the light of day we might not make it
I don’t know if it’s real
I don’t know how to deal with you
What are we going to do

What are we going to do about it
This little thing that you and me have started
Tonight is not enough
I might just fall in love with you
What are we going to do
